Step inside the world of opera and experience the extraordinary power of the human voice up close

Led by professional opera singer David Stout, Opera Unplugged – inside the opera voice is a fun, informal and interactive introduction to what makes the operatic voice so unique. Discover how singers produce such a remarkable sound, how breath, body and technique work together, and how emotion and storytelling can completely transform a performance.

This is not a traditional talk or lecture. Expect a lively, relaxed session where you can ask the questions you have always wanted to ask, hear live singing at close quarters and take part in some breathing exercises yourself. No musical knowledge or singing experience is needed — just curiosity and a willingness to join in.

Whether you are completely new to opera, have always wondered how singers do what they do, or simply fancy trying something different, Opera Unplugged offers a welcoming and entertaining way to discover opera from the inside.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

David Stout has established himself as one of the UK’s most versatile baritones, with a reputation for vocal prowess, refined acting, and a charismatic stage presence. In addition, David is a zoologist with an extensive knowledge of the natural history of southern Africa. He has recently climbed Kilimanjaro and is the author of three adventure novels in The Enlightened series.

Scottish Opera appearances: title role Don Pasquale, Doctor Bartolo The Barber of Seville, Henry Kissinger Nixon in China, Renzo Silvano, Astrologer The Burning Fiery Furnace, Frank Edgar, Marcello La bohème.

In the 2025/26 season, he returns to Deutsche Oper am Rhein as Mamma Agata in Donizetti’s Prima la Mamma and to Grange Park Opera as Alberich in Das Rheingold. He also makes his house debut at the Royal Swedish Opera as Figaro in Figaro Gets a Divorce, and appears on the concert platform with the London Philharmonic Orchestra in Vaughan Williams’ A Sea Symphony and with the Huddersfield Choral Society in Handel’s Messiah.
